Jamaica Crime News, Montego Bay: A popular Montego Bay businessman was taken into custody following the seizure of over 890 boxes of counterfeit cigarettes at his home in Westgate Hills in Montego Bay on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.
The police stated that the name of the accused is being withheld, but arrangements are now being made to question him in the presence of his lawyer.
Reports by the Narcotics Police are that, during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, a team from the Narcotics Division carried out an operation at a house located at Westgate Hills in search of drugs.
During the search of a house, the police stumbled upon 890 boxes of counterfeit cigarettes inside the house. The items which have an estimated street value of several million dollars were seized.
The lawmen then went to a section of Lilliput in Rosehall, St James, where they seized a container which they said is believed to be the storage area for the counterfeit cigarettes.
Investigators further pointed out that, the accused businessman could find himself being charged with breaches of the Trademark and Customs Act.
