Jamaica News. Montego Bay: Marvalyn Kerr, who goes by the alias Marcia, is Western Jamaica’s top female Tyre Patcher. It won’t be a surprise to many if she is the only active female doing tyre works in Jamaica.
Marcia inherited her skills from her father who was very popular at the Clock property near the Tastee complex at upper Barnett Street, Montego Bay. Her father Newton Kerr who was popular among taxi operators in the parish, encouraged her to learn the trade of patching tyres. She took the opportunity and now she says she has no regrets.
Marcia has been Tyre Patcher for over 23 years, and come November, she will be celebrating her 24th year since she solely operates the business, after the passing of her father in 1995.
She can volcanize, Patch and change tyres of all sizes. She has a few well-established companies that she works for on a regular basis, namely, Sandals Hotels, The Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Jamaica Constabulary force.
“This is what I do to send my four children to school, although none don’t want to carry on the trade, I am now teaching a man name Ron Baker who I can leave here when am not here,” said Marcia. “I have no intention of giving up the trade I will be willing teach anyone who comes along and interested to learn.” She added.
