Jamaica Crime News, St James: A man who is said to be of unsound mind, was taken into police custody on murder charges, after he reportedly beat his step-father to death with a baton at their home in Lilliput, St James, on Friday, morning, November 30.
The accused man has been identified as 28-year-old, Shamari Morgan, unemployed of Barrett Hall in Lilliput.
Morgan was taken into custody after he was caught beating his elderly step-father, 62-year-old Douglas Thomas to death at the family house in Lilliput.
Reports by the Freeport police are that about 4:50 a.m. on Friday, Thomas who resided with his wife on their two-storey dwelling house in Barrett Hall, Lilliput, was at home on Friday morning when he was attacked by his step-son, who resides on the downstairs of the building.
The police reported that the mentally challenged step-son armed himself with a baton, which he used to beat Thomas repeatedly.
A police officer who resides in the community overheard the elderly man and the mother calling for help, and rushed to the house to assist them.
He saw Morgan who still had the baton in his hand, beating the lifeless victim.
The officer accosted the accused and managed to take him into custody.
He later called for assistance and upon the arrival of other police officers, Douglas was transported to the Falmouth hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The accused step-son was immediately taken into custody in connection with the killing.
