Jamaica News, St James: Citizens of Montego Bay, St. James, are now overwhelmed with their constant contact with those considered to be ‘mad people’ who are now becoming a threat to their lives.
A resident of Lilliput, St.James Palette Whyte shares an experience she had encountered with a ‘mad person’ while shopping at Pandora’s bakery, Montego Bay. “I went to buy some Sugar buns, when one of these street people walk into the shop and the owner said to come out, I also followed in telling him to come out… then he used a bottle to hit me in my chest!…my husband has to be bathing me daily for two weeks sometimes I feel the pain whenever I touch the spot where I got the lick…you are not safe around them, the mayor must find some place to put them they are a threat to society!” said the disgruntled lady.
On many occasions, these people have used the Plazas as their homes, they tend to pile up a lot of garbage making it comfortable enough for them to sleep. A report was filed a few years ago where a ‘mad person’ was reportedly doused with gasoline and was set ablaze, he was admitted in the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was said to suffer severely about 60 % body burns.
Another upsetting situation that was put forward by the citizens was how they had to be rubbing against these ‘mad people’ whenever there was a concert or any gathering in the town’s square. This posed a health threat to the individuals gathered there as these ‘mad people’ reject their hygienic needs.
The authorities continue to be called upon to put appropriate measures in place so that these mentally ill persons can be removed from the streets and be provided with proper health care.
