Jamaica News: Minister of Justice, Hon. Delroy Chuck, says the Government is actively searching for suitable land for the construction of a state-of-the-art court in St. James.

Minister Chuck noted that a new court is urgently needed in the parish in an effort to improve access to justice for citizens. He said that funding is available for the project.

The Minister was speaking at a ceremony for the installation of 22 new justices of the peace for Trelawny held on Friday (September 14) at Mangos Beach Resort in Cooper’s Pen, Falmouth.

He noted that the new court will facilitate Court of Appeal sittings in St. James.

“I am aware that the Judicial Services Commission is likely to appoint more Court of Appeal judges. When that is done, the likelihood is that we can have three or more panels, and I know that the President of the Court of Appeal is looking at likely having sittings in Montego Bay. One of the difficulties with sitting in St James is the inadequate provisions,” he explained.

The Minister said “the Prime Minister and our Cabinet are determined that over the next two fiscal budgets, additional court facilities will be provided”.

In the meantime, he indicated that all courts across the island will be outfitted with cameras in an effort to improve security.

“Our court complexes will have cameras detailing what is happening in each courtroom, in each corner of the court and around the court. That, I hope, will be able to identify any movement…if there’s a movement, say at night, we can identify what is happening,” the Justice Minister said.
