Jamaica News: The Ministry of Labour and Social Security and The Mico University College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to work together to better disseminate labour market intelligence, increase career development and populate a Skills Bank with certified persons.

The MOU was signed in the Museum Lecture Room of The Mico University College in Kingston on Tuesday (February 19).

This MOU will also support the Ministry’s Labour Market Information System (LMIS), an Internet-based system that facilitates job placement, provides labour market intelligence and offers career development services.

In her address, Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Shahine Robinson, said the Ministry is partnering with The Mico University College because of the tremendous role that training institutions will have to play in preparing workers for future jobs and the ever-changing labour market.

“The Mico University is a school of excellence which has earned its respect for providing high-quality education to Jamaicans and the Caribbean, and many of your past students now hold leadership positions in Jamaica and around the world,” Mrs. Robinson said.

“As the Minister of Labour and Social Security, I welcome and embrace the partnerships that we have been able to forge with stakeholders and training institutions such as The Mico University College. The relationship has resulted in us being able to touch the lives of students who are in pursuit of a higher education, and today, we will be bolstering that partnership by helping to transition the students, when they have been trained, into the world of work,” she added.

Mrs. Robinsons also thanked The Mico University for previously supporting the LMIS Adoption School Initiative, through which a student, Evaughn McKenzie, was granted a scholarship by The Mico to pursue a degree in Mathematics Education.

MICO to Offer New Programmes
“As the premier teacher-training institution, we are most happy to be partnering with the Ministry of Labour and Social Security in this venture, which will help to promote and empower our graduates,” Dr. Pinnock said.

He pointed out that the partnership will again enable the institution to use labour market research and trends to tailor its teaching and learning, “to graduate the most competent and workplace-ready professionals to fill the needs and demands of the local and international labour markets”.
