Containers Pile-Up at Kingston Freeport Terminal

Kingston, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – Containers Pile-Up at Kingston Freeport Terminal: In a release from the Kingston Freeport Terminal this morning, the company said more than 1,200 containers are sitting on the port awaiting clearance, because importers have not been coming in to clear the containers.

As a result, containers have begun to pile-up on the Terminal to the point where this has started to affect service delivery. Thirty-eight (38) percent of the containers have been awaiting clearance for more than two weeks, while thirty-one (31) percent has been there for as long as three months awaiting clearance. The remaining 31 percent of containers have been there for a week.

Ian Telfer, Manager of Yard Operations at the Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited, said the uncleared containers by importers have now created a serious challenge.

The operator of the Kingston port facility, was the scene of protests in June and August by truckers who complain of long waiting times. The operator has also noticed a reduction in the number of appointments made to clear containers over the past three to four weeks. Because of this, the port operator says 30 percent of the uncleared containers remain on the port on a daily basis.

The company is now urging all businesses with uncleared containers to contact its Gate Operations Unit urgently to make arrangements to have the cargo cleared
