She is breaking down barriers by becoming the first and only girl on the Mt. Alvernia Preparatory School U8 football team, which consisted of all boys until she joined the team in September 2018. Joining the football team was always a desire of hers, however, despite several requests over a two year period to the then coach, she was always told that it wasn’t going to happen. Her older brother Damani who also attends Mt. Alvernia Prep was a part of the U10 football team at the time. Keeks’ passion for the game intensified and she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her brother.

When Khiyanna was asked why she loves football her response was: “I love football because it is exciting and intense. I also love being a part of a team that has only boys. They don’t mind. I love that I get to meet different teams from different schools and they are always shocked to see an only girl!”

“I am extremely proud of my daughter because she is the first and only girl to make the team! She has an amazing drive to succeed which is evident in her love and passion for the game. I am quite pleased that the Coach at Mt. Alvernia Prep realized her skill and wanted to help her develop that skill by allowing her to be a part of the football team. When I watch her play football, see how she interacts with her teammates as well as the opposing teams, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of fulfillment and awe. She has been fully accepted by the boys and that makes for a great team!” said her mother, Barbie Khan-Nembhard.
