Justin Burrowes Under Pressure in Alliance Buccaneer Golf Tournament

Defending champion Justin Burrowes ended day one of the Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament at Caymanas Golf Club in fifth position after posting 76 or five over par.  He will tee off on Sunday at 11:10 am from hole number 1.  He hopes for a better day as he is currently five stroked behind leader William Knibbs who shot 71 or one under par.

Dr. Mark Newnham shot an even par 72 to end the day in second position.  Shamar Wilson who also shot 72 was tied for second with Newnham.

The professionals had a good day on the course with Lloyd Campbell posting one under par 71.

Perennial ladies winner Jodi Munn-Barrow leads her section with a score of 76 or four over par.  She said that the course conditions were good but rough in some areas.  She will be the first golfer on the course on day two at 7:00 am.

The Men & Men Senior category was in the capable hands of Philip Gooden who carded 77.

Dorrel Allen scored 76 to lead the Men Super Senior (7-12 handicap) section.

The girls section was headed by Mattea Issa.  she posted 91 on day one to lead the 11-13 age group.  Ryan Lue who compete in the same age group posted 78 to leads the boys.

The final section see Matthew Grant in front on 88 in the boys 14 – 15.

The golfers will take to the course starting at 7:00 am for the second and final day of the tournament.

The format of play features: Saturday and Sunday – Medal Play HCP 1-12, Modified Stableford HCP 13-24, Professional, Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies and Juniors while on Sunday it will be Modified Stableford HCP 10-12, 13-24, 25-36, Men and Ladies.  The Juniors will compete for the Vitoria Marley Trophy (she died in an accident on a golf course).

This year’s competition is being played in the memory of seven of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives, namely Milton ‘Buddy’ Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford, Al Chong, Claude Stewart and Mark Chin – former captain of the Buccaneers.

The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 30 at the Caymanas Golf Club in St. Catherine.
