Jury Returned Not Guilty For Man Charged with Statutory Rape

St Catherine, Jamaica (McN) –  Jury today found  a St Catherine man charged with having sex with a minor, not guilty in a unanimous verdict.

Andre Williams, 22-year-old of Linstead, St. Catherine, was tried in the St. Catherine Circuit Court and found not guilty of the charge of having sex with a person under the age of consent, 16.

Trial arguments revealed that the complainant contacted Williams on Facebook, and later had sex with him on his birthday, as a birthday “gift.”

Testimonies at the trial revealed that the 16-year-old lied to Williams, stating that she was over the age of 16 at he time of the sexual intercourse act.

Earlier in the case presiding judge, Justice Marcia Dunbar-Green denied an application filed by Williams’ attorney to have the case dismissed. The case then went to trail before a jury for verdict.

The jury deliberated for around 30 minutes, and reached a unanimous verdict of not guilty, dismissing all charges against Andre Williams.
