Jamaica Crime News, St Catherine: A Jamaica Defence Force soldier who is based in the Zone of Special Operation regiment in Mount Salem, St James, was arrested by the Spanish Town police after he was caught with an illegal firearm, and several rounds of ammunition, along Crescent District, in Spanish Town, St Catherine on Saturday, October 6.
The accused has been identified as a 26-year-old Private, who also resides at Crescent District.
Reports by the Spanish Town police are that about 9:15 p.m. on Saturday night, a team of officers were carrying out patrols duties along sections of Crescent district when they saw two men involved in a dispute.
The officers stopped and intervened, and noticed one of the men had a firearm in his waistband.
Upon inquiring if he was a police officer, they learned that he was a member of the Jamaica Defence Force.
Further investigations revealed that the weapon, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, serial number S/N G23151, which was loaded with a magazine containing twelve live 9mm rounds, was illegal.
A further search of the soldier’s vehicle revealed an additional nine 9mm rounds.
He was taken into custody and transported to the Spanish Town lock up.
Our news team also learned that, in his defense, the soldier informed the officers that he had found the illegal weapon along Logan’s Lane in Linstead, St Catherine, while he was on duties between 2015-2016.
