Jamaicans in the United States are reportedly ecstatic about the announcement by Democratic Senator Kamala Harris that she will run for president in the 2020 election.

The California senator, who was elected in 2016, has a Jamaican father and an Indian mother.

Wayne Golding, a member of the Jamaica Disapora Advisory Board for the Southern US, said they have been paying attention to her rise in politics and were expecting the announcement.

“We are very excited that the confirmation of what we felt that we knew all along was gonna happen,” he said.

Mr. Golding said it is delightful that a member of the Jamaican diaspora has the opportunity to be elevated to the presidential office.

Harris, 54, is a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and is described as a rising star within the Democratic party.

Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tulsi Gabbard, John Delaney and Julian Castro are among those who have also announced their intention to run.

The 2020 Democratic presidential primary will be the first time more than one woman competes for the party’s nomination.
