Jamaica News, Kingston: Jamaica has secured a brief reprieve from the US sanctions aimed at Russia.
This mini victory impacts operations at Windalco that is operated by Russian firm UC Rusal.
Mining Minister Robert Montague said dialogue with the US government through their diplomats means business will continue unhindered from the sanctions atleast until the firmβs General License 14 (GL-14) expires onΒ October 23.
Though temporary, the three-month reprieve is likely to lift some of the anxiety and fear facing employees and communities that benefit directly from the companyβs mining operations.
The US says it is committed to ensuring the Jamaican economy is not adversely affected by the sanctions and will continue negotiations to help chart a way forward even after the license has expired.
The USA has slapped Russia with multiple sanctions for its activities across the world to include US election interference and its actions towards Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea.
