Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) to Lose $1 Million Funding in the Next Two Years

Jamaica News, St James: Minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, J. C. Hutcherson, has announced that within the next two years., the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) will become a non-government organization and will have to stand on its own two feet.

Mr Hutchinson who was speaking at the 38th staging of the Montpelier Agricultural Show in Montpelier, St James, on Monday, April 22, further stated that the JAS is over 125 years old, with a membership of over 220 members and it is now going to be transitioned from a public body to a non-government organisation.

He further stated that the JAS will now have to make their own money in order to finance their own operation. At present, the JAS receive a yearly grant of 100 million from the government, to assist with the daily running and functions of the all-island agricultural society, and this will be cut off in 2021.
