Iphone Thief Caught On Tape, Gets Bail

Jamaica Crime News, St James: Iphone Thief Caught – A man who was reportedly caught on video footage stealing an iPhone from a Montego Bay business establishment, was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 in the St. James Parish Court on Wednesday, April 3.

Charged with simple larceny is 19-year-old Wayne Hawkins of Canterbury, St. James.

The court heard that on February 11, 2019, the complainant was doing stocktaking when he noticed that an iPhone 7Plus valuing $97,000 was missing from the showcase. The complainant subsequently viewed video footage and saw the accused man removing the phone from the showcase.

The defendant returned to the store on March 23, and the complainant recognized him from the video footage and contacted the police who came and arrested him.

In court on Wednesday, presiding judge Sandria Wong-Small offered Hawkins bail in the sum of $100,000 with up to three sureties with conditions for him to report at the Barnett Street Police Station daily. A curfew order between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. was also imposed on him.

He is to return to court on May 31.
