St James, Jamaica (Mckoy’s News) – Illegal Firearms Seized: The St James police have said the year 2017 was a success in relation to the seizure of illegal firearms and the drive to rid the parish of illegal firearms and ammunition was commendable.
According to the police, at the end of 2017, a total of 173 illegal firearms were seized in the parish along with hundreds of assorted rounds of ammunition. The ‘Get the Guns Campaign’ which was launched in 2016 and executed across the parish also contributed greatly to these seizures and in September of 2017, the Prime Minister implemented the Zone of Special Operations in the community of Mount Salem and several firearms were also seized.
Illegal Firearms Seized: in that same period, Prime Minister Holness announced a one week amnesty on illegal firearms that were seized and an all-island cash reward drive that would be presented on every illegal firearm that was turned over to the police. In that same month, over 25 illegal firearms were seized in the parish of St James and the police said this is the largest number of firearms seized over such a short period ever in the history of the parish.
Also, St James recorded the most 9mm semiautomatic pistols and assault rifles seized from the streets in 2017.
The police stated that over fifty persons were taken into custody in connection with these seizures and more than 30 individuals so far have been charged and dragged before the court.
According to the law officers, in 2018 they will now be pressing harder and hope to score a much bigger success.
