Hopewell, Hanover (Mckoy’s News)- Hopewell Mall Shooting: Police officers attached to the Sandy Bay and Lucea Police Departments in Hanover and a team from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) are now carrying out investigations in relation to an incident which occurred at the Hopewell Mall on Friday morning. The incident left one person nursing gunshot wounds at the Cornwall Regional Hospital and a firearm seized.
Reports by the police are that about 2:00 a.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017 a policeman who is presently on suspension but working as a security officer at a newly opened night club on the Mall responded to an altercation between two patrons at the Club. Further reports are that the security officer noticed one of the men pulling a firearm from his waistband and pointing it at the other man. The security officer intervened and the man allegedly pointed the gun at him.
The Security Officer reached for his licensed firearm and fired two shots one of which caught another patron. The man dropped the firearm and fled the scene and it was retrieved by the officer. The Sandy Bay police were contacted and on arrival, the weapon was turned over to them and the wounded man who turned up at the hospital was treated and is now been questioned.
The lawmen say they are presently seeking the man who had the firearm and is carrying out further investigations to determine if the firearm is an illegal weapon or if the man being sought is a licensed firearm holder.
