Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness on IMF

Holness likely to talk elections in House today

All eyes will be on the House of Representatives this afternoon, Tuesday August 11, when Prime Minister Andrew Holness could give further indication of when General Elections are likely to be held.

On Sunday, he told a meeting of his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) that now is as good a time as any to ask the people to go to the polls to give his administration a second term. He said then that he would be giving a date “soon soon”

The PM’s address to the House is also expected to focus on COVID-19 and a recent spike in numbers, taking the total confirmed cases up to yesterday to 1,031. Mr Holness indicated last week that the measures to fight the virus could be tightened.

Some political pundits believe Mr Holness could announce the date in the House, and outline agreed protocols for the campaigning period, with elections likely early September.
