Hanover Residents Block Several Miles, Protesting Police Killing of Gang Member

Hanover, Jamaica (McN) – Hundreds of angry community members from Springfield, Greenland, Dias, Williamsfield, Kingsvale and Cacoon in the parish of Hanover took to the streets of their communities in protest over the police fatal shooting of one community member on Saturday night.

The residents block several miles of roadway leading from Lucea through these communities to Westmoreland with the use of fallen trees huge stones, old motor tires, old refrigerators, old motor vehicle and other objects and demanded justice.                   

The protest started as early as 6:00 am on Wednesday and hampered several schools from having their daily sessions and commuters from going to work.

The main road was impassable for taxi operators and other motorist.

Mckoy’s News news team caught up with mother and brother of the victim Elaine Thompson and Rayon Rose who told us that their love one was killed in cold blood by the police.

According to them the victim “Winston Swaroogs” was a hard-working father of 8 children.

He was a mechanic employed to the Chikka Blue Adventures Tours in Trelawney as a mechanic and only came for the weekend to visit family members when he was shot from his motorcycle by the police.

Shooting Incident 

Police however  reports that, shortly after 9:00 pm on Saturday a team of officers were conducting spot checks along sections of the Williams Field main road when they signaled two men travelling on a motorcycle to stop.

According to the police, one of the men opened fire at the police and the fire was returned and Swaroogs who was the  rider was shot and killed.

The motorcycle crashed and the man on the pillion got up and escaped in bushes.

A Taurus 9mm semi automatic pistol containing several live rounds were taken from the deceased.

Police have linked Swaroogs to the Notorious “One Voice” gang.

A special team from the Lucea CIB and INDECOM are now carrying out investigations.

The family is now saying they will not stop blocking the roadway until they get justice and they are serious.
