Hanover Municipal Corporation Clamps Down on Illegal Digging of Sewage at Orchard Beach

Jamaica News, February 13, 2018

Hanover, Jamaica (McKoy’s news) – Hanover Municipal Corporation: Several complaints were made to the Hanover Municipal Corporation and the Parish Development Committee by fishermen and concerned residents in Hopewell, Hanover over the past week. These complaints were in relation to a sewage pit which is being dug on a section of the Orchard Beach in Hopewell. The Municipal has now served a stop order on a specific brand restaurant which operates on the Beach Front.

Our news team has learnt that this project to dig a raw sewage pit on the Beach is being carried under the supervision of a certain Councillor and a prominent politician in the area.  Several residents and fishermen at the fishing beach have stated that they are very concerned as the workmen have started to dig the pit on the grounds of the fishing beach and have so far come upon sea water, but still, they continue to dig.

We have also learnt that the Municipal Corporation have served a stop order on the operators but due to the fact that a certified stop order takes up to 14 days to come into effect the workmen were still seen working up to Sunday afternoon.

Craig Oates, Compliance and Enforcement Manager at the Hanover Municipal Corporation told our news team that the Council was made aware of the situation and carried out an investigation at the compound.  He stated that based on the findings, a stop order was served on that specific business to cease from digging the pit and the Council is now in the process of taking legal action on the operators.

Mr Cleveland Wright, President of the Hanover Parish Development Committee stated that his office has been informed about the construction of the sewage pit and he believes this project will destroy the marine life and pose a health threat to fishermen and the bathing public.  He further pointed out that his team is also taking the necessary steps to ensure that the construction of this purchase of the sewage pit is discontinued.
