Jamaica Sports News: France Beat Croatia – 1998 champions France, joined Uruguay and Argentina as two-time winners of the FIFA world cup, when they beat first-time finalists Croatia 4-2, in a pulsating final at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow on Sunday.
A game which just labored on for the first 15 minutes, finally sprung to life in the 18th minute as the French took the lead against the run of play and it came from the head of Mario Mandzuki who had the dishonor of scoring the first ever own goal in a world cup final.
However, the lead lasted only ten minutes as the Croats drew level with a well-taken goal from Ivan Perisic on 28 minutes.
Another piece of history led to France retaking the lead on 38 minutes, as it was after consulting with the Var, that referee Nestor Pitana decided to award them a penalty and Antoine Griezmann duly slotted home.
The game was, however, put beyond Croatia’s reach 14 minutes into the second half, when the hard-working Paul Pogba scored from just outside the area, after profiting from his own rebound.
The party then officially kicked into gear in the 65th minute, when the French made it 4-1, thanks to the 19-year-old Kylian Mbappe.
A goalkeeping error from Hugo Lloris, allowed Mandzukic to squeeze one in with 20 minutes remaining, but by then France was already out of sight.
Mbappe was named young player of the tournament, Luca Modric the Croatian captain was voted the tournament’s best player, Harry Kane of England won the golden boot and Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois the golden glove.
The next FIFA world cup will be held in Qatar in four years.
