Neither team could find the winner inside 90 minutes and it needed extra time to finally separate them and when it arrived, it came from the lanky striker Mario Mandzukic, who ghosted behind the England defense to hit them cold 11 minutes from time.
England never recovered as Croatia won 2-1, to set up a repeat of their 1998 world cup semi-final against the would-be champions France.
