Jamaica News, Trelawny: Fire of unknown origin destroyed the distillery storage area at the Long Pond Sugar Factory in Trelawny on Monday afternoon of July 16th.

The fire which workers at the estate say started in a section of a canefield at the estate, burned through the canefield and caught the distillery room where the main stock of rum is kept.

The fire started shortly after 4:00 p.m. and quickly engulfed the distillery storage area.  Firefighters attached to the Falmouth Fire Department were summoned to the scene but upon arrival, they could only manage to carry out cooling down operations as the fire had taken over the entire area.

Fighting the fire also proved somewhat difficult for the firemen due to a large blanket of smoke which was formed from the burning field and blazing alcohol.

Up to press time, the police and the Fire Fighters were unable to comment on the mass of the damage and also to give an estimate in damages.  No-one was hurt.
