Jamaica News: More than 55 per cent of inmates at the all-female Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre who sat the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations this year passed at least one subject.

Of the 29 inmates who sat the tests, 16 received passes in Mathematics; English A; Electronic Document Preparation and Management (EDPM); Principles of Business; Food, Nutrition and Health; Office Administration; Human and Social Biology and Principles of Accounts.

All the inmates were successful in the Food, Nutrition and Health; 75 per cent received passes in Office Administration; 66 per cent in Human and Social Biology; and 60 per cent in EDPM. One inmate received six subjects with scores ranging from grades one to three.

Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, Hon. Rudyard Spencer, congratulated the inmates, noting that the “results show that we are dispelling the myth that nothing good can come from behind bars”.

He was speaking at an appreciation ceremony held at the correctional centre’s South Camp Road location in Kingston on Tuesday (September 18).

Mr. Spencer encouraged those who were unsuccessful to continue to persevere.

“I encourage all wards and inmates to not limit your potential. Focus on your dreams and utilise all the resources and support to create a new path for yourself and your families. What you have done is merely the beginning,” he said.

He made a commitment to provide tuition support for those who have been accepted to pursue tertiary studies.

“Being here is an opportunity to fulfil the potential that you have… and we want you all to realise that potential,” he said.

He also extended commendations to inmates at other correctional facilities who have done well in the recent sitting of the CSEC. He pointed out that one inmate at the St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre passed six subjects, scoring ones and twos; and another from Rio Cobre Juvenile Correctional Centre, who passed four subjects.

Mr. Spencer lauded the teachers for the sterling work they performed with the inmates, and the various partners who have been working with the Ministry to transform the lives of the inmates.

Acting Superintendent, Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre, Joycelyn Roach Spencer, commended the inmates and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.

Fort Augusta Adult Correctional Centre is the country’s only prison for women.

The CSEC programme is part of the Department of Correctional Service’s (DCS) rehabilitation programme, which is aimed at breaking the cycle of crime and violence by creating productive men and women through transformational educational, vocational and practical initiatives.
