Dr Andrew Wheatley has resigned from the cabinet

Dr Andrew Wheatley has resigned from the cabinet.

He tendered his resignation via a letter to Prime Minister Andrew Holness dated July 30, 2018.

He said his decision to step aside is to ensure transparency and public trust are not breached.

Dr Wheatley’s letter followed hot on the heels of yet another high profile meeting with the Prime Minister over the weekend.

There had been repeated calls from

the Opposition and some civic groups for  Dr Wheatley to be removed from

the cabinet entirely.

He had previously been relieved of his duties as Energy Minister but still held portfolio responsibilities for Science and Technology.

The South Central St Catherine Member of Parliament says he will now focus on his constituency and his parliament duties.

The resignation is the latest high profile casualty from the Petrojam scandal where state funds were inappropriately used.
