DeMarco and Cover – Joint Leaders in 52nd “Alacran Jamaica Open” Day One Aborted Due to Bad Light

Canadian professional golfer Thomas DeMarco and American pro golfer Patrick Cover currently sit atop the leaderboard after posting 3 under par 69 to finish day one of the 52nd Alacran Jamaica Open which is being held at Tryall Club for the first time.

DeMarco was pleased with his performance though the conditions were brutal for golf.  He said “it was really fun.  I woke up this morning and it was really windy and I accepted the challenge and had some fun with it.  I played seventeen holes of some of the best holes I could play and I just had a couple of bad shots on one hole and made a triple but other than that I played very good considering the conditions, cause this is not an easy course in the wind cause its really tight but it was fun.  I enjoyed it.

Thomas Demarco

Regarding the conditions he said “it’s tough cause on this side you can feel the wind a lot more and it has way more effect on the ball.  Once you get on the other side of the road you can’t feel it anymore because it’s so treed so you kinda guessing which way the wind is gonna move it.  It kinda plays with your mind a little bit cause you trying to figure out what the wind is gonna do with your ball.  The biggest thing is to not get upset when you guessed wrong and it does something you don’t want it to do and you just go ok hit a good shot the next time and just keep plugging away.  It was tough it was definitely not an easy round today but I am happy.”

He agreed with many of the other golfers that the last five holes were very challenging.  He looks forward to the other two of the championships.  DeMarco who is 22 years is playing in his first Jamaica Open.

Top Amateur Robert Owen

The best performing amateur was Robert Owen of the USA.  According to him, “I was very happy I played.  I hit the ball very well. made some good putts but overall a really good round.”  He knows the course well having been playing it for the past five years.

Wesley Brown

The best placed Jamaica professional was Wesley Brown.  He closed the day on even par 72.

The defending champion Hernan Borja (pronounced Bora) of the USA scored one over par 73. He is currently tied for 9th place with four other golfers.

The field of 96 golfers include 71 professionals and 25 amateurs, however one golfer withdrew after feeling sick while playing hole number 3.

The 52nd Alacran Jamaica Open teed-of this morning at exactly 7:30 on hole number one with the 1979 Jamaica Open winner Norman March taking the ceremonial tee shot to start the proceedings.

Day one was aborted at 5:50 due to poor light conditions, with five groups of golfers still on the course.  They will continue their round at 6:30 in the morning while day two will begin at 8:30 from holes one and eight, in order to not have a repeat of day one aborted play.
