Def champ Justin Burrowes returns for Alliance Buccaneer Golf Tournament

Kingston, Jamaica: Defending champion Justin Burrowes will compete in this weekend’s 24th staging of the Alliance Buccaneer Memorial Golf Tournament at the Caymanas Golf Club in St. Catherine. It is Alliance Investment Management’s 12th sponsorship).  Burrowes who is currently on a golf scholarship at the Florida Atlantic University is anxious to defend his title at the two-day tournament.

He will be facing some local golfers who have been doing very well both at home and abroad.  Burrowes will be challenged by people like national champion Sean Morris and Dr. Mark Newnham who teamed up to help Jamaica win the country trophy for the Caribbean Golf Association Four Ball Championship in Florida and were one, two respectively in the Heroes Weekend Golf Classic.

The tournament will host a professional section comprising of twelve golfers, after a long absence of professionals.  Pro golfer Wesley Brown also returns home to play with the pros.  He has been playing professionally in the United States for some time.

Over one hundred golfers from across the island will descend on Caymanas and will tee off between 7am – 11 am daily.  Some of the amateurs who will be on the course include former Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) presidents Gordon Hutchinson and Wayne Chai Chong, Maurice Foster, Peter Chin (current JGA president), Men Senior – Rory Jardine, Robert ‘Bobby’ Chin, Gregg Chong and Tommy Lee; Men – Radcliffe Knibbs, Ladies and Juniors.

The tournament will feature two different competitions running concurrently.  One will be a two-day – 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association qualifier while the other to be played on Sunday will be a Stableford competition in the form of a charity fund raiser for the Laws Street Trade Training Centre.  The objective for this year is to hand over in excess of one million dollars.

The format of play features: Saturday and Sunday – Medal Play HCP 1-12, Modified Stableford HCP 13-24, Professional, Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies and Juniors while on Sunday it will be Modified Stableford HCP 10-12, 13-24, 25-36, Men and Ladies.  The Juniors will compete for the Vitoria Marley Trophy (she died in an accident on a golf course).

Peter Chin, CEO of title sponsor said that Alliance Investment Management was happy to continue its sponsorship of the tournament because the proceeds are used by a worthy organization – the Laws Street Training Centre, to help hundreds of persons who are really in need.

This year’s competition is being played in the memory of seven of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives, namely Milton ‘Buddy’ Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford, Al Chong, Claude Stewart and Mark Chin – former captain of the Buccaneers.

The awards presentation ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, November 30 at the Caymanas Golf Club in St. Catherine.
