Social Media and more so Nationwide News are having a field day taking Damion Crawford to task over comments he made at a political rally in East Portland on Sunday, March 3, 2019, where he was being introduced as the candidate for the PNP in the upcoming by-election.
Experts on gender and race/class issues are being trotted out mostly to milk the comments for all the green juice they can drink. The panel gathered by Cliff Hughes for the crucifixion included Jennifer Edwards of the PNP’ Women Movement, who was invited putatively for ‘fairness’, but in actuality to drive the proverbial nail in the coffin they had arranged for Damion as she was pushed and badgered her to carry the position of the unbiased Host and the others, who included the non-partisan and objective Marcia Forbes and Juliet Cuthbert. Jennifer Edwards was made to dance, but Cliff Hughes was evidently upset that she had brought Reggae while he and others wanted her to do the Tennessee Waltz.
Having accused Damion Crawford of sexism, misogyny and racism, they set about not trying to prove their accusations, but to drown listeners with emotional appeals about being ‘disappointed’, ‘shocked’ and ’embarrassed ‘. The Cliff Brigade of Battle axes gathered to crucify him even compared Damion Crawford to Donald Trump as they tried hard to transform his specific comments about one woman into general comments about women when it is obvious that few women aspiring to be a Parliamentarian would ever show up with Anne-Marie Vaz’s evident shortcomings and unpreparedness. With all the emotional waves being stirred up, it was difficult to get a handle on the bone of their contention, and it soon became apparent that the specific gathering, excluding Jennifer Edwards, were there to campaign for the JLP and to beat Damion Crawford for them and Anne-Marie Vaz, who really have no business in or Parliament unless the standards have been drastically lowered from where it has reached. From the little that is revealed of her -they are hiding most- it is clear that she is not qualified for the highest law-making body of the nation. Race and class seem to be the only fuel in her tank as she is being driven to fulfill her ambitions as a lawmaker, because she is white-looking and comes from the so-called upper class.
In mentioning this, Damion is being classified as a racist when what he said is the ugly truth that he is not responsible for. An academically qualified Black man is being asked to contest a seat for Parliament to represent Black people with a woman who struggles to put a proper thought and sentence together. What else apart from race/class could have catapulted her to such a lofty position. Let us hear of the gargantuan efforts that she has undertaken prior to now to help the poor and dispossessed in East Portland and elsewhere. Show us that she has been on the battlefield, selflessly sacrificing to make life better for people, and don’t regale me with handouts, one day bellyfuls and hand-me-downs. This should be regarded as an insult, because she doesn’t come with anything that one could consider redeeming. These people who put her forward, and support her efforts were some of the same ones who branded Mrs. Portia Simpson-Miller a dunce and dragged her up and down their muddy road. Well, if you compare the two, Portia is a University Professor of the highest calibre; and she earned her stint in Parliament, government and as PM by dint of hard work and commitment over the long haul. Not one of these gender experts and women’s rights advocates cane out to support or say a word in her defense. Her lowly political opponents even went as far as to superimpose the head of a John Crow on her body. The world is not level, and Jamaica is not level, but also rocky.
Connections of class and race run Jamaica, and any denial of this is just straying from the truth. In pointing out the known and obvious, the offended can only say that he shouldn’t have said it. To carry on as if it will destroy the fantastic harmony shared among the races is very ‘extra’ and dishonest. There is only make-believe harmony, and the majority people have been and are mostly content with their lot of being poor, marginalized and exploited. It is the youths whom have grown dissatisfied and impatient with the problem, and this is a large part of the struggle with crime and violence. When a people have gotten so used to being unfair that not even the unfairness of their actions can be acknowledged, it is a lost cause trying to reason with them about it. People have to be jolted out of their comfort zones that they live in that are a source of daily discomfort for others.
Jamaica needs a Damion Crawford, because it has not had much better for a long time. We have not had a true Champion of the people since Michael Manley. Others have come, but they came only with words rather than deeds and a true commitment to raise the people up and invest in them. Perhaps they are afraid of being let down, because many would have witnessed the betrayal of Michael Manley by those whom he fought for siding with their enemies to dethrone him; and so they do the little that they can, and say as little as they can to upset the status quo remembering full well that they won the battle to keep the majority people in their places, and now there is hell to pay for it with crime and violence. However, the gate keepers of the status quo are not concerned, because they are shielded from the crime and violence. Soon they will come up with a strategy throw the people a bone to further protect themselves, and to preserve the legacy of slavery and colonialism. Damion Crawford is a threat to all that, and I hope that the majority people have their eyes, ears and noses open to the potential that he represents. It is the hope of many that he makes it all the way to the highest office, and that he will remain true to the cause to change the lives of the people who need it most. Jamaica cannot continue like this…. If he betrays the people to hell with him too! Next.
