CTOC Clamping Down on Illicit Cigarette Trade

Jamaica Crime News, Kingston: Illicit Cigarette Trade – Operatives attached to the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch, CTOC, say they are making a significant dent in the illicit cigarette trade, with the seizure of more than $670-million worth of counterfeit cigarettes since the start of 2018.
The leadership of CTOC said customs officers are heavily involved in the illicit trade as they facilitate criminals getting these goods.
Kingston and St James were among the two parishes listed as prime spots for the trade and are therefore given extra attention by investigators.
Carreras Limited estimates that the illicit trade controls as much as 25% of the local market.
