Corrupt Cop Fined $500,000, Gets Suspended Sentence

Jamaica Crime News, St James: Corrupt Cop FinedAfter bribing a police sergeant into compromising an investigation, a St. James police officer will have to pay the government $500,000 in fines and is left with a suspended sentence hanging over his head.

Constable Kirton Green, who is represented by attorney-at-law Adrian Dayes, appeared before the St. James Parish Court Monday morning. He had pleaded guilty to breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Constable Green was one of the four police officers implicated and dismissed of the charges in the unlawful release of the prisoner Greg Taylor.

The allegations against the cop are that in 2017, a Sergeant was dealing with a case at the Freeport Police Station in connection to an individual who was in custody. It is alleged that Green then offered to bribe the Sergeant into compromising the investigation.

The Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency (MOCA) was contacted and a sting operation was set up. The cop was held at a particular location on the Freeport Road in the process of giving cash to the Sergeant. He was arrested and charged

In passing sentence on Monday, the judge imposed a fine of $500,000 or six months in prison. The sentence was suspended for two years.
