Correctional Services Week Being Observed From October 22 to 25

Jamaica News: ‘Transforming Lives – Restoring Hope for a Better Jamaica” is the theme for the Department of Correctional Services’ (DCS) Week, to be observed from October 22 to 25.

The DCS’ Director of Corporate Communication and Public Relations, Dexter Thompson, told JIS News that the activities will kick off with a thanksgiving service at Webster Memorial United Church in St. Andrew on Monday, October 22.

The Department will host a sports day and exposition at the St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre Sports Club in Spanish Town on Tuesday, October 23.

Inmates from adult correctional centres will be cooking and serving breakfast and lunch to students at a number of schools islandwide, as a part of their outreach activities on Wednesday, October 24. They will also be reading to the students and giving them motivational talks.

The activities will culminate with an awards dinner at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston on Thursday, October 25.

Mr. Thompson noted that the DCS has been transforming the lives of inmates through their educational skills programmes offered in numeracy, literacy and computer training.

Vocational skills training is also provided in barbering, home economics, art and craft, tailoring and farming.

“Persons under the charge of DCS also have the opportunity to sit Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects including Mathematics, English Language, Agriculture, Clothing and Textile, Principles of Business, Social Studies, Human and Social Biology, Music, and Physical Education,” Mr. Thompson further indicated.

The DCS has seven adult correctional centres, one adult remand centre, four juvenile centres and 17 community service offices (probation aftercare offices) islandwide.

The Department’s core functions are custodial services (adult and juvenile institutions), community services, and rehabilitation.
