Jamaica News: The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) will officially open its Festo Authorised and Certified Training (FACT) Centre for Mechatronics and Automation, at its Palisadoes Park Campus, on Wednesday, September 19.

The facility, which is the largest FACT Centre in the world, will offer a multi-layered approach to training through the offering of a wide range of courses. It was built at a cost of over $700 million.

Speaking at a JIS ‘Think Tank’ on September 12, Executive Director for the FACT Centre, Mr. Rene Flores, said that some services of the centre are already oversubscribed, as a few large corporations have requested training for personnel.

“We have a wide range of technologies – from the basic of mechatronics to industry 4.0 (the current trend of automation and data exchange in manufacturing technologies). Festo is a global player in industrial automation and factories around the world are outfitted with Festo components,” he said.

Festo certification is a global stamp of approval for specialised engineers and is equivalent to ACCA certification for accountants and CISCO certification for IT practitioners.

“This is why it is important to have the partnership with Festo, because our students and participants from the industry are in touch with real industrial equipment,” Mr. Flores added.

The Executive Director pointed out that the FACT Centre provides specialist training in mechatronics, which is a combination of mechanics, electronics and information technology (IT).

“This is important for industry because with one trained person you can manage a whole automated system and you are able to fix any automated system. That is why it is important for the factories to have a person with that profile on staff,” Mr. Flores said.

He explained that the centre, which is the first of its kind in the English speaking Caribbean, is currently training persons from the industry and will eventually provide international Festo recognised certifications.

Students will benefit from over 20 professional certificate and diploma courses, including the Bachelor of Engineering in Mechatronics, and the Master of Engineering in Mechatronics and Automation.
