Jamaica News: The Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) has issued 67 ganja licences to local companies and individuals since its establishment in 2015.

The disclosure was made at a Jamaica Information Service (JIS) ‘Think Tank’ today (August 27) by Director of Research, Development and Communications at the CLA, Felicia Bailey.

Ms. Bailey also noted that there are 21 applicants at the ‘licence granted’ stage of the process.

“Upon payment of the requisite licence fees and security bonds, these licences will be issued. Due to the impact of COVID-19, it is estimated that these payments should be made within the next couple of months,” she said.

The CLA has issued seven licences up to July 31, in the 2020/2021 financial year.

The licences granted include 28 for cultivation, 23 for retail, 11 for processing, four for research and development, and one for transportation.

According to Ms Bailey, the CLA has also issued 315 conditionally approved licences from the 712 applications received since the Authority’s establishment in 2015.

“Conditional approval is the stage where the Authority allows the applicant sufficient time to put in place the requisite infrastructure to support the granting of the respective licence. A pre-licensing inspection is usually done by our enforcement and monitoring division to verify the suitability of the site before the granting of that licence,” she explained.

Ms. Bailey said the Authority is committed to facilitating the growth and development of the industry.

“The CLA is working on several key projects, including the amendments of the interim regulations, the finalisation and promulgation of the regulations of the import/export, transit and transhipment of cannabis,” she added.

The CLA is an agency under the portfolio of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries that was established in 2015 under the Dangerous Drug [Amendment] Act with a specific role to establish and regulate Jamaica’s legal cannabis and hemp industry.
