A lady who states that her child was unfairly taken away from her in Kingston in the year 1991 is now pleading her case on social media to help locate her son.
The woman, Nicolene Downer, states that it has now been over 28 years since the incident, and she is still in pain. She recalled her child being forcefully taken from her by a police district constable who allegedly took the child for a court hearing.
“…FB friends can you help me find my son that was stolen from me in 1991— two months after he was born under a so-called arrest of my baby father by a district constable from the Old Harbour Police Station. [The constable] later came and took me away from my baby for a court hearing that was not done.” She said in a Facebook post.
She continued by stating that in 2001 she reached out to the Peterkin’s Talk Show and expressed her pain of losing her child and was asked to provide her number off-air. From that, she received a call from a Mr. W. Bowen, who she said, identified himself as the Director of Children Services. He offered to meet her at the Oceana Hotel in Kingston to discuss the situation, in which, Downer said she agreed to attend.
“In this meeting so much happened that I was left heartbroken. I started telling him I will be getting a lawyer, to which, he offered me one of their lawyer. I refuse, because they are government authorities and the legal aid lawyer never defends a case against the government fairly. I became very loud and afterwards he told me that my son was adopted by Jamaican-born, Canada-based, parents, and he could provide me with their information.”
Downer expressed that she never gave way her child and her child was never registered with the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) so she questions how anyone was able to get any documents (Birth Certificate) to process an adoption for her child without informing her or the child’s father. She claimed they [the government authorities] had no right in doing so.
Downer explains that the beginning of this situation occurred at the Glenhope Place of Safety on the Maxfield Park Road in Kingston.
“He was not registered, but, was admitted in the children home on the same compound as ‘Baby Downer’,” she said
She believes that this is why Mr. Bowen was able to quickly contact her after he heard her plea on the Peterkin’s Show.
She is asking if anyone knows her son and has a contact for him or the parents, please provide information via email at [email protected]
