Jamaica News: National Child Month 2020 will be launched virtually on Wednesday, April 15 under the theme ‘Unplug Negativity, Connect Positivity…Think!’ `
Chairman of the National Child Month Committee (NCMC), Dr. Pauline Mullings, told JIS News that due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, activities for the Month, which is observed during May, will be significantly curtailed.
“The NCMC has decided to go through with the observance, as this is one of our mandates to ensure that the month of May is recognised annually in Jamaica as Child Month. We know it is a challenging time because of COVID-19, but when we think about this year’s theme, it fits into what is happening now that the children are at home where they are interacting with technology and the various social media platforms,” she said.
Dr. Mullings explained that the theme for 2020 was coined in light of the rapid advancement of technology, and in particular social media, which is a good thing. However, the majority of children are not able to manage their interaction with these platforms as well as they ought to, so it can be used in a negative way.
“Our aim is to help the children to unplug the negative side of technology and social media and to connect in a positive way,” she pointed out.
Guest speaker for the event, which is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m., is Chief Executive Officer of Digital Global Marketing Limited, Kemal Brown.
The public is invited to participate in the launch of Child Month 2020 by joining the NCMC Zoom Meeting at https://us04web.zoom.us/j/2770391764?pwd=SVN5TFlCMHpVNThEbEpNY0YwNTFkQT09. Meeting ID: 277 039 1764 or join through the NCMC Facebook page.
