United States ( McKoy’s News) – Child Celebrating Birthday Shot in the Head: A 5-year-old Bronx boy was shot in the head by a stray bullet on his birthday Monday evening, June 5, cops said.
The incident unfolded in Morrisania outside of 1138 Washington Ave. at around 5:15 p.m., according to police.
The child, identified as Jaheem Hunter, was walking out of the building with his dad and had been caught in the crossfire of a nearby shooting, cops said.
Two men in the area — who had bad blood — were trading verbal jabs in front of the pair when one of them brandished a pistol and started blasting, sources said.
The other man fled down Washington Avenue, causing the shooter to give chase.
As the suspect was running, he continued to fire several rounds in his foe’s direction — one of which struck the youngster in the head, cops said.
“The child had just finished visiting his father and was being walked to a waiting car,” explained NYPD Asst. Chief Larry Nikunen.
Hunter was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital by his dad before being transferred to Columbia Presbyterian. Sources said he is expected to survive as the bullet lodged in his skull, but did no brain damage.
No one was taken into custody on Monday night, but police were canvassing local surveillance footage to find clues about the shooter, who was described as a Hispanic male.
The incident left Bronx parents on edge.
“My 3-year-old could have been sitting out here with her child care provider on the stoop and it could’ve been her,” said Helen Davis, who lives nearby.
“This is not the first time this happened,” she added. “This is ongoing on this block. There’s never police presence over here whatsoever to protect none of us. You know how we know what’s going on? By coming home and seeing chaos. It’s just ridiculous. We can’t live like this. I don’t want to live like this, honestly.”
