Beyonce Remembers Having Multiple Miscarriages, “Had to Mother Myself”

Beyoncé may be perfect to many, but as flawless as she is, she too has had it rough.

Letting her crown slip just a little, Queen Bey has revealed the hardships she has experienced during a raw and emotional interview in the UK edition of Elle Magazine. In 2012, the “Spirit” singer transitioned from being an artist, Grammy award winner, and wife, to becoming a mother as well. Blue Ivy was born on January 7th in New York City and was the first child for both Beyoncé and her husband JAY-Z. Five years later, the couple added to their brood with twins, Rumi and Sir.

Although now a happy family of five, that was not always the case for the Carters. Prior to Blue’s birth, Beyoncé had undergone several miscarriages. “Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else,” she said in the “Ask Me Anything” interview in which she answered questions submitted by her fans. “Then I had Blue, and the quest for my purpose became so much deeper.”

Jay-Z previously addressed the miscarriages the couple had endured on his song “Glory.” “Last time the miscarriage was so tragic / We was afraid you’d disappear / But, nah, baby, you magic,” he raps in reference to his almost 8-year-old daughter.

Speaking on how her miscarriages affected her, Beyoncé told Elle, “I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. It’s difficult for me to go backwards. I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed.

Almost a decade after the painful experience, Bey’s life is undoubtedly on the up. She has numerous awards on her mantelshelf, a triple-platinum album, three beautiful children, and successful marriage.

Success looks different to me now,” she says. “I learned that all pain and loss is, in fact, a gift.”
