Jamaica News: The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation has signed a contract with Caribbean Technology Solutions to provide the audiovisual system at the Ward Theatre.

Speaking at today’s (August 14) sitting of the Corporation, Mayor of Kingston, Senator, Councillor Delroy Williams, said renovation work continues on the 106 year-old building located in downtown Kingston.

“The funding for that is from the Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund. Earlier, we had signed the contract for the installation of new seats at the Ward Theatre and that was also funded from the CHASE Fund,” the Mayor said.

Councillor Williams emphasised that the redevelopment of the area is important. “We have been taking action as the Municipal Corporation to renovate and restore it and I think we have been doing a good job,” he said.

The restoration project is being undertaken by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, in collaboration with the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation.

Other works carried out on the historic building so far include installation of waterproof membrane on the roof; the fitting of countertops and basins in one restroom and four changing rooms; installation of drywall ceiling and sanitary fixtures; termite treatment, and repair of side walls.

The Ward Theatre is the largest and most historic theatre in the English-speaking Caribbean.
