St Andrew, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – Sweet Victory for Angela Brown-Burke: Norman Gardens former Councillor, Angela Brown Burke, has won the race to become the People’s National Party’s candidate for St Andrew South Western.
Angela Brown-Burke polled 598 votes to defeat Audrey Smith Facey who received 502 in a selection exercise, which was held on Sunday, July 30, 2017. This selection exercise was called by the party’s executive as a result of a controversy over the replacement process.
Julian Robinson, the party’s General Secretary said that out of the 1,894 delegates who were eligible to vote, only 1,105 voted. There were 8 spoilt ballots.
Former Prime Minister and Party President, Hon. Portia Simpson Miller had earlier endorsed Senator Brown Burke as a prospective candidate for her St Andrew South Western constituency. Brown-Burke is expected to resign from Parliament’s Upper House.
Audrey Smith-Facey, who is the Local Government representative for the Payne Land Division in St Andrew South Western, said she thought Simpson Miller was ‘grooming’ her to take over.
The selection exercise went smoothly, disturbed briefly only by concerns about voters without identification or those with errors in the spelling of their names.
According to Deputy General Secretary Wensworth Skeffrey, discrepancy issues were resolved through the appeal committee.
It is expressed that the person who is likely to win the upcoming by-election will be extremely important to the supporters in the PNP, with a focus on who will replace Party President Dr. Peter Phillips when he abdicates office.
