Jamaica News, St Andrew: A huge fire is now spreading across sections of the Mavis Bank coffee belt in the Blue Mountain range in St. Andrew.

According to Managing Director and CEO of the St. Andrew-based Mavis Bank Coffee Factory, Senator Norman Grant, some farmers have reportedly lost several acres of coffee plants to the furnace which continues to spread.

Some of the coffee fields have gotten damaged already. One coffee farmer said they lost about nine acres,” he told McKoys News. “It (fire) is close to the factory now“.

Senator Grant said the last major fire within the region was approximately five years ago. He said the wind and prevailing dry conditions are hindering the firefighting efforts of both the Jamaica Fire Brigade firefighters and the Jamaica Defence Force Air Wing (JDFAW) soldiers who are battling fervently to extinguish the blaze.

Senator Grant says the cause of the fire is not yet known.
