The doctor will advice you about what to do and what not to do to increase your chances of getting pregnant.
2. Chart Your Cycle
Menstrual cycle is the time from the first day of you period to the day before your next period. Average length of a menstrual cycle is 28 days, but the length of a menstrual cycle range from 21 to 35 days. The cycle length can also vary from month to month in the same woman. Menstruation is controlled by hormones and occurs each month to prepare your body for pregnancy.
Your body releases an egg from the ovaries once a month, which is called ovulation. The egg travels to one of the fallopian tubes and waits to be fertilized by the sperm. The uterine thickens in preparation to receive the fertilized egg. If the egg is fertilized, it moves into the uterus, attached to the uterine lining, leading to pregnancy. You will not have a period if pregnancy happens. If the egg is not fertilized, you menstruate to shed the uterine lining in the form of menstrual discharge.
Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary each month. There are different methods of tracking the ovulation.
- Calendar Method: Ovulation normally happens about 14 to 16 days before your period starts. You can pinpoint the day if you maintain a record of length of your menstrual cycle on a calendar.
- Basal Body Temperature Method: You can track your ovulation by measuring your basal body temperature each morning. If you see slight increase in temperature, it may mean that you are about to ovulate and further temperature increase means you are ovulating.
- Ovulation Predictor Kit Method: You can use ovulation predictor kit to track your ovulation. Luteinizing hormone (LH) increases in your body just before ovulation. An OPK detects the LH surge and tells you when you are approaching ovulation and when you are actually ovulating. The test predicts ovulation based on LH concentrations in urine.
The best way to get pregnant quickly is having vaginal sex on the days around ovulation. Sperm needs to fertilize an egg, which can happen if sperm is present in the fallopian tube when ovulation happens. Conception occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the wall of your uterus. An egg lives for about 12 to 24 hours after its release. Sperm can survive in the women’s reproductive system for about 5 days after sex. Usually a woman is fertile for about 6 days of every menstrual cycle. You have good chance of getting pregnant if you have sex during five days before ovulation or on the day of ovulation.
