150 Students to Participate in PCDF Summer Employment Programme

Jamaica News: Approximately 150 secondary and tertiary level students are set to gain meaningful work experience under the PetroCaribe Development Fund’s (PCDF) Summer Employment Programme.

The participants will gain valuable skills and experience by working in various government entities for periods of four weeks. Their stipends will be paid by the PCDF.

An orientation session for the students was held at the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, Heroes Circle offices on June 8, where they were provided with useful information on workplace etiquette and resume preparation.

Participating entities in the programme include: the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF); Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF); Ministry of Labour and Social Security; Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA); Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFA); Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ); and the Department of Correctional Services.

Chief Executive Officer of the PCDF, Dr. Wesley Hughes told JIS News that the programme seeks to equip the nation’s youth with the requisite skills that will assist in national development.

“It is very important that we engage our young people at all levels. It is important that they have some semblance of what the future looks like… and give them a sense that they have great potential and can recognize and exploit them,” he stated.

What we did was to select public institutions that are important for delivering public goods to the country… and give them the opportunities that they need as students, individuals and (future) employees,” added.

Meanwhile, Acting Human Resource and Administration Manager for PCDF, Sheena Woodburn, congratulated the participants on taking this initial step into the working world.

“We see the summer programme as a valuable tool in aiding in the development of our young people. The programme aims to provide our interns with meaningful employment opportunities in their respective areas of studies,” she said.

Ms. Woodburn added that the programme has been favourably received by interns, as well as by participating agencies.

Some 517 interns have benefitted from the summer employment programme since its inception in 2013.
